The Wall Street Journal wrote an article confirming that Sharp and Sony have confirmed their decision in joint LCD HDTV panel production. This is falling suit to the similar production between LG and Philips which is now named LG Display. Personally, I can not wait to see what the name Sony and Sharp will come up with. Until then the plant has begun construction, and will open on schedule in March 2010. Sharp has invested 2/3 in this venture with Sony putting in the other third.

Anyone who knows me well knows that I have never been an advocate of the Monster cables for video or audio. However, the debate does need to be kept separate for these two. Recently, the audio portion was put to the test, and I have always been on the side that Monster audio cables are a waste of money. Read on to find out what the test results were.

Pioneer anounces halt in Plasma Production
Posted On March 3, 2008, 9:07 pm By Chris ShafferUnder Plasma
Today is truly a sad day in the flat panel market. Pioneer, the company regarded as the best manufacturer announced that they would no longer be making their own displays. Instead they have will be assembling their displays with panels bought from other sources (most likely one of the two remaining Japanese makers Panasonic or Hitachi). We can only hope that the money the company saves by this move will be reinvested into R and D to bring us the next big thing in display technology!!

Sony now top LCD seller
Posted On February 9, 2008, 1:49 pm By Rick HarrisonUnder Liquid Crystal Displays (LCD)
Sony has not seen the top of the LCD market for a while, but that has ended in the last quarter of 2007. This is largely due to their new impressive models in the XBR4 and W3000, which boast 18000:1 contrast ratios. The XBR is of course their flagship model with the 120hz processing, and absolutely amazing color. But all of their models helped contribute to this, and as you can see Vizio is losing its clout on this market. Samsung is still the leader in all flat panel sales when you include plasma, but who knows what it would be like if Sony was still producing plasmas.

OLED lifespan now doubled
Posted On January 25, 2008, 1:44 pm By Rick HarrisonUnder Organic LED (OLED)
OLED's seem so perfect in every way except for one. Their lifespan is shorter than that of an LCD. OLED's used to be rated at 30,000 hours, which is significantly shorter than the common LCD 50,000 hours. But guess what, now along with their absolutely amazing colors and contrast, they will now last for you to see it! Toshiba and Panasonic have found a way to double the lifespan of OLED televisions. According to them, they now use a "metal membrane" to move light around more efficiently. As long as it lasts, doesn't really matter to me how they do it.

OLED Examples From CES and What It Means
Posted On January 9, 2008, 7:12 pm By Rick HarrisonUnder CES 2008
CES has been full of surprises for any TV fanatic. From 9mm thick plasmas to 82 inch LCD's, there has been nothing but amazing electronics on show. Panasonic showed us an 150 inch plasma, and Pioneer displayed a new Kuro with the most amazing black levels ever seen on a plasma. But the most hype has most certainly been around the new OLED televisions. These sets are hyped up to have amazing pictures, and to be more cost effective than LCDs. The hope is that in the future, OLED's will completely take over LCD's.
At CES, the general expectation was for Sony, Samsung, and Toshiba to unveil their own takes on the OLED sets. Unfortunately, Toshiba was unable to deliver, and only Sony and Samsung displayed their versions. First, I'll give ya a little history and description on the OLED tv's before going into Sony and Samsung's versions.

So for now, I will sit here and just dream about having one in my house, and the rest of you can do so as well after seeing this picture.

- I am trying to program my Direct TV remote control to my 24" Dynex TV. Dynex does not appear on the TV listings which I am given. I've tried using other TV Manufacturer's but it gives me a message stating that my TV is not programmed. What can I do to resolve this problem. Thanks. Mike- None of the TVs I've looked at have a video out jack. How can I record stuff onto my VCR if there's no video output capability? The salesmen, as expected, have no clue.
- Just bought and set up a 42in.JVC 1080p LCD TV. The salesman tried to sell me an HDMI cable for $80.00 claiming that this set required it to maximize picture quality. I didn't buy it and just went ahead and used the component cables from my previous Sony 720p projection TV setup. It looks good to me but I've since seen HDMI cables on eBay for $10.00 or less. Question: is there any justification in performance or quality to account for a $70.00 spread between what appear to be identical cables? Whatever the performance benefit, my main interest in HDMI is to eliminate some of the "cable clutter" at back of the set.
- Do you know the specific specs and prices of the new 2008 LG LCD models? Especially the LG70 and LG71 series? I'm looking for things like contrast ratio, if it has 120hz, processing power( 14-bit), what bit-panel it has, things like that. Or just whatever you can find. Thanks
- Have a Toshiba 56 in projection that after 20-30 min the Connivance is shifting to a point that you see 3 images (red, blue, white). After about a 45-60 min of the entire shift it stops and than you have to and realign the colors. Questions 1 Is this repairable? 2 If so what should I expect to spend? 3 Or should I just say good bye and get a new HDTV? Thanks
