Just bought and set up a 42in.JVC 1080p LCD TV. The salesman tried to sell me an HDMI cable for $80.00 claiming that this set required it to maximize picture quality. I didn't buy it and just went ahead and used the component cables from my previous Sony 720p projection TV setup. It looks good to me but I've since seen HDMI cables on eBay for $10.00 or less. Question: is there any justification in performance or quality to account for a $70.00 spread between what appear to be identical cables? Whatever the performance benefit, my main interest in HDMI is to eliminate some of the "cable clutter" at back of the set.

Honestly, the answer to your question is still up in the air for HDMI. We here at Tv Simplified have done some side by sides using Name brand cables such as the $80 one your probably saw and ones we bought of the web for a minimal cost. We could not tell a difference in picture or sound quality between the two using just our eyes and ears. Now as for the benefits of HDMI, generaly you will be able to see a difference between any HDMI cable and a set of component cables. However, the amount of this difference will depend on where your content is coming from. You will notice a bigger difference when watching say a blu ray movie then you will just watching TV from your cable or sat box. If it were my money, I would go with an HDMI cable. If you want, you can click on the Resource link and check out some of the sites we have listed under video cables. I hope we have answered your question, and as always if you have an others feel free to ask any time!

None of the TVs I've looked at have a video out jack. How can I record stuff onto my VCR if there's no video output capability? The salesmen, as expected, have no clue. (Answered June 26, 2008)
